I like the solarbotics BEAM bots (http://www.totalrobots.com/robot-kits-beam-solarbotics-c-6_7.html). They're not too expensive and get more advanced as you do. I started with Herbie the Mousebot, a lightseeker.
http://www.rapidonline.com/ sell a lot of cheap kits, from line following, avoiding objects, maze solving.all are targeted at school kids/teaching, so are fairly easy.
Well I'm looking for something to do on Thursday night at the moment and then it's the swarm bot, but of course (as discussed) one of your kits (a special one) is on my list.
