Event Description

A monthly meetup for robotics enthusiasts and hobbyists to share knowledge and ideas, collaborate on projects, play with robots and build a robot army to take over the world.

Well, maybe not the last bit. Not yet anyway.

This will be the first meet for the group and will be a social designed to meet the other members and share experiences. Members should bring along an example robot that they have built (if they have built one) or at least come armed with lots of enthusiasm.

If you are bringing along a robot and would like to tell me what it is, please contact Emily.

Emily will be bringing along her fighting mini-sumo robots and her arduino and would like to discuss ways to use it to replace the robot's brainboard. She would also like to discuss using the gyroscope inside the iphone to remotely control a robot

Alan will also be bringing along his sumovore - the first robot he has ever built and will be able to talk about the trials and tribulations of beginning robotics. And with so many sumovore's in attendance we will be digging out the robot sumo ring so that attendees can work out their differences robot-style.

Thanks to Emily and Ian for getting this going. An excellent turnout of 22 people I think. Great to meet you all. Also thanks to John for the Skiff (a cool place indeed). Hopefully there will be many more of these gatherings :-)

I know Neil at Beeb Control. Funnily enough I purchsed the Jessop Turtle off him! The BBC Buggies are still expensive, I am lucky enough to have 2. One is 100% mint and probably was never used. The other is a rare PC version. If I can I'll bring them along. The turtle even has a retro Berol pen for nostalgic effect. Lets see who can draw a house using LOGO :-)

OMG! Jessop Turtle?! I used to program that at high school! Memories of trying to get it to draw triangles on big sheets of paper during school lunch times (yep, there was never a time when I wasn't a geek):

I'd seen adverts for the Buggy but could never afford one as a kid:

+1 that you bring 'em along!

If I get to come along, I'll bring some bots too. I'll hack together something together with my Arduino. If anyone feels retro I could always bring along the old BBC Micro, BBC Buggy and Jessop Turtle (LOGO) from the 1980's

Excellent timing, I'll be in Brighton that evening so I can bring a couple of robots from the Robot lab at Sussex Uni, including a prototype arduino bot that doesn't work yet ;(

Steve - where Emily is concerned there is always a danger of free beer (a la our FivePoundApp nights). We're expecting about 10 for the first night and Exciting Robot Wars via two sets of sumo bots constructed by Emily and Alan.
See a demo of the fighting bots filmed at the xmas £5 App night:
